Operation aftermath
Residents likened the region to a battlefield after the mission

No less than 64 individuals were killed in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, state officials said. Over 80 people were detained.

Security forces deployment
Around 2,500 law enforcement officers took part in the police raid

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

Government representatives confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Residents have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, along with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Wider Perspective

Major law enforcement actions are frequent in the country before major international events in the nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is taking place in the northern urban center in late autumn.
