Lando Norris Advances Nearer to Title as Verstappen Takes Vegas F1 Race Win
Lando Norris currently holds a thirty point lead over fellow driver Oscar Piastri with just 58 points available in the final two races
The McLaren Lando Norris stepped closer to a maiden world title with second place in the Las Vegas Grand Prix following the Red Bull of Max Verstappen
The British driver currently heads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished fourth behind the Mercedes of George Russell, by 30 points heading to the penultimate race in Qatar this coming weekend
Norris will claim the title in the Qatar as long as he doesn't surrender more than five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
Piastri, so strong in the first half of the championship, has failed to finish on the top three for six races
"Verstappen had a good race. I made the mistake at the beginning and was overly aggressive on that opening corner," stated Norris
"It's still a good result to secure second. I've got to praise Verstappen and Red Bull"
Following Qatar, the final race of the championship follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The main developments of among Formula 1's most prestigious races included:
Lando Norris continued his momentum towards the championship losing the victory to Verstappen
Oscar Piastri's difficult run of form continued as his championship chances wane
A superb win for Verstappen to keep him in the title fight
Recoveries for the two Ferrari drivers, after a tough qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton securing a single point for 10th following beginning at the back
Verstappen Remains in Title Battle
Max Verstappen overtakes Lando Norris at the beginning after the McLaren driver ran wide at the first corner
From the beginning, Lando Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not present to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his advantage from starting first from Max Verstappen
But following an aggressive cut in front of Verstappen to head off the Dutchman's attack on the inner line, the McLaren driver misjudged his braking zone and ran deep into the turn
This allowed Max Verstappen to overtake into the first place while the British driver also second place to Russell
Through two virtual safety cars for several opening-lap incidents, featuring at the start when Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson collided with Piastri, Max Verstappen gradually established dominance on the race
George Russell made an early pit stop for the hard tyres, but Norris and Max Verstappen stayed out
Norris pitted five laps following the Mercedes and Max Verstappen 10
The Red Bull driver was able to rejoin still in the lead, Russell having been failed to close in on the Red Bull car despite his newer rubber
Lando Norris rejoined after Russell from his pit stop but following a several careful circuits to let his tyres to settle, quickly closed his 3.3-second gap to the Mercedes and overtook into runner-up position on the thirty-fourth lap
Norris asked his race engineer how to run the rest of his event, effectively questioning whether he should settle for second or challenge for the lead
He was told to "chase down Verstappen" but it quickly became apparent he had little opportunity. Max Verstappen was readily could repel Norris' attacks, and in the final laps the margin increased substantially as the McLaren started to suffer a mechanical problem which has thus far not been defined
Despite losing almost three seconds a circuit, Lando Norris was could hold off Russell because of the extent of the advantage he had established while pursuing Verstappen
The Red Bull driver's sixth win of the championship - just one less than both McLaren drivers - was achieved in emphatic style and maintains him in championship contention, at least mathematically, although he requires problems for Lando Norris in the final two events to pass him
"It's still a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize all we've got," Verstappen stated
"In upcoming weekends we will attempt to take victory in the race and by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi we will see where we finish, but I'm very proud of everyone"
Disappointing Event' for Oscar Piastri
Piastri started in fifth but lost two positions on the opening lap after being hit by Lawson, who was quickly eliminated of the battle by a broken front wing
He followed Liam Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before overtaking him on the Las Vegas Strip but also position to Charles Leclerc, who he was could overtake again during the pit-stop period
Piastri finished behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who competed almost the whole event on the durable compound following pitting during the initial VSC, but was awarded a five-second time penalty for a starting procedure infringement, which was not clearly visible on replays
"It was a frustrating race from pretty much start to finish in certain respects," Oscar Piastri told race broadcasters
Questioned about how he would approach the final two races, he commented: "Just try to position myself in the optimal situation I can. I clearly need several of things to favor me at this stage to take the title, but my only option is make myself in the best position to capitalise if circumstances change"
Charles Leclerc held on in sixth place, insufficiently close to benefit from Antonelli's penalty, while Sainz fell to seventh place at the finish, his Williams missing the speed to compete with the top teams in the dry conditions, after his impressive showing to start in third in the wet
Isack Hadjar secured eighth place ahead of the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton
The seven-time title winner made a strong getaway, rising to 13th on the opening circuit and proceeded to move forwards
He got stuck in a slipstream group with a bunch of other cars but was could use his electric start to rescue a championship point after the worst qualifying performance of his career
