The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
