The Reasons the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Royal Titles – and What It Means for the Monarchy
In a announcement issued via the royal household, Prince Andrew has declared he is relinquishing his official honors, including the Duke of York. Here is an overview of what was announced – and what remains unchanged.
What Has Andrew Announced?
After previously withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, the prince has now decided to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “title or the awards which have been conferred upon” him.
However, he used the statement to emphatically denying – as he has always done – the accusations of sexual impropriety made against him; even though having paid out millions to settle the legal claim brought by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied any claims of improper conduct.
There has been ongoing scrutiny on the monarchy regarding the allegations involving the prince – especially since his ill-fated Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims that his actions are to protect the royal family from further damage resulting from media scrutiny.
Did the Monarch Removed Him of His Honors?
Not at all. And, while this might be viewed as a simple procedure, it holds importance in multiple ways: first, it enables the prince to publicly claim to have behaved with integrity in support of the crown. As he said in his statement: “I have chosen, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my relatives and country first.”

Why Was He Not Been Officially Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To revoke a dukedom would take an act of parliament, and would represent an unprecedented step in full view of the nation – it has not happened to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it could result in further reputational damage for the royals.

While he said Giuffre had been “justified” by the move, her sibling Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “genuine accountability” to be done.
The republican advocacy organization Republic has also said the action is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be divested of every honor and his military position and should undergo a criminal investigation. Refraining from using archaic honors is not a penalty that matches the accusations.”
