The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
