We are checking images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
